We will leave Olcott, NY (south shore of Lake Ontario) about, 15th of July and cross Lake Ontario to the Trent-Severn canal system and on into Georgian Bay, the Straits of Mackinaw, then transit down Lake Michigan to the Illinois River to the Mississippi River to the Ohio, then on to the Tennessee River to the Tom-bee River to Mobile, Al and the Gulf of Mexico, west coast of Fl., Key West, Cuba, then onto the Caribbean where we will voyage the winter months.
In the spring we will head north, returning to Lake Ontario via the East Coast, possibly Bermuda, the Atlantic, and then possibly the Hudson and NYS canal system or the Maine coast, P.E.I., Gulf of St. Lawrence, to Lake Ontario.
Specific ports will be selected (weather pending) two to four weeks in advance. You will then be advised of the specific port LaVida will arrive in to pick you up and which one you will leave from.
Captain Qualifications
My name is Michael Ritenour, I'm 52 years old and have been at sea for most of my life. I'm a USCG Merchant Mariner, USCG Aux.trained and have over 35 years of boating and sailing experience.
My resume and letters of reference from former crew members are available on request. I believe in running, a happy ship and only yell in emergencies.
Boat LaVida is a 33' Cape Dory Sloop. LaVida comes from the drawing board of Carl Alberg and is a sea kindly ship of moderate size and easily handled by a crew of two. She is a traditional boat, sailing about 7kts in a decent wind. Down below she has a full wood interior, 14 opening ports, head, shower, private stateroom forward in the v-berth, and three bunks in the main cabin. She had a COMPLETE refit last year, that took two years and passed her survey with flying colors. Some equipment highlights: a hard dingy and outboard motor, liferaft (when in ocean segments), vhf radio, gps, windvane, and an eprib (when offshore). A recent picture and survey of LaVida are available and if you desire there are more pictures of the interior and exterior available.
Crew As for experience level, we can accommodate anyone from a beginner to a seasoned salt. I do ask prospective crew members to be honest in their abilities and constraints. I expect each crew member to pull their own weight on board according to their skill level. It's a small boat, voyaging afar and we will all depend on each other. Watch standing and regular chores are a part of crewing.
My 7 year old son will be onboard on a month on and month off basis, starting with the first July voyage segment. During the time onboard I home school him plus use the voyage to broaden his education. He's a seasoned sailor and a valued member of the crew. When he is onboard I will only have one berth available, when he's not I will have two to three berths available.
When you book please advise me if his presence will pose a problem for you. I fully understand that some folks don't enjoy sailing with childern, others don't mind. For me it makes no difference which way you choose to go as long as your serious about going!!
On-board The boat is a non-smoking boat (although, on rare occasions, we've been know to make exceptions, such as fantail smoking, but none below deck).
DRUGS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED ONBOARD. ANYONE CAUGHT WITH DRUGS WILL BE IMMEDIATELY PUT ASHORE AND LEFT TO FIND THEIR OWN WAY HOME.
We do, of course, partake of our "happy hours" in moderation. I expect people to conduct themselves with honesty and integrity and good hygiene. If you ask, I don't mind teaching what I know and I'll always ask to learn what I don't.
The travel mood will be some days of push on and some days of stand by with, the emphasis on having fun, adventure and moving on.
Booking & Travel Please make your travel arrangements as flexible as possible, remember what we are doing is weather dependent and can change at any moment, although we expect to be able to adhere to our planned schedule fairly well, one never knows what the hurricane season will bring to the Gulf of Mexico, Atlantic or the Islands during the voyage.
I expect the boat to be gone at least 16 months, possibly longer and cover a lot of sea miles.
Since precise schedules are not possible when sailing, I've evolved the following voyaging template which has worked well in the past: 27 days voyaging, porting for three days of maintenance & travel, a 27 day voyaging cycle, then porting for three days of maintenance and travel, and so on for the estimated 16 months.
Please note voyaging means porting, sailing, anchoring out, etc., etc.. The three days are to clean up the boat, take a plane, etc.
Bookings are in approximately one week intervals, available from mid-July 1999 til October 2000, with December 1999 and January 2000 not being available for booking at the moment.
Legal Bits You will need to be in good health (disabled people are encouraged to apply).
Provide evidence of health insurance(valid for your intended cruising area); a return airline ticket from your port of embarkation (any and all travel outside of passage on LaVida is your responsibility) and sign a wavier of liability.
As a guest on LaVida you will be required to pay for your own expenses of $25.00 per day, per person. [This money goes into the ships kitty for underway food, fuel and daily maintenance. The crew (all of us) shop before leaving port and purchase food everyone eats. Additional dietary items are your own personal choice and expense.]
Porting and tying up to a dock for a run ashore, laundry, shower, etc. is an expensive proposition while voyaging. We try and anchor out as much as possible to keep our ship's expenses as low as possible.
When in general agreement, we will port, then the berthing/docking charges are equally
divided up between those onboard. The berthing/docking charges are additional to the
$25.00 p/d
Porting on travel days are not subject to charge.
(ALCHOL IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE PER DIEM COST, BYOB OR PURCHASE IT AT DUTY FREE ON YOUR WAY
DOWN)
To book your voyage segment the following is required:
A deposit of $25.00 per week, "good faith money" to book & confirm your days on board. This will need to be made as soon as your accepted as a crew member. This is refundable if you cancel before May 30, 1999, after that date you lose it. 4 weeks before your arrival you need to pay 25% of your voyage segment, IF YOU DO NOT SHOW UP FOR YOUR VOYAGE SEGMENT YOU WILL LOSE YOUR INITIAL BOOKING DEPOSIT AND YOUR 25% VOYAGE DEPOSIT.
The remaining balance to be paid in full before departing the dock. For example:
You book the first two weeks in July: Total $350.00
Deposit required $ 50.00 June first you need to send: $ 87.50 Upon arrival you need to
pay: $212.50 Balance before leaving dock: $000.00
Money will be refunded only in the event the ship dosen't sail or a medical emergency.
Crew arrives and departs on travel days, for which there is no on board per diem charge.

Hello, Would you like to crew as deckhand+ on my 30' sloop sailing from Seattle, WA to San Francisco, CA during the last two weeks of September 99? I hope so, because I could really use the help and company! I'm 28, a guy, and can't pay you any money. So it's a volunteer position, but a fun one!
The ship is a Rawson 30' pilothouse, full keeled. The galley is fine, the berths are dry, and you can stand most of your watches inside the pilothouse where it's warm. She's a good small cruiser.
If you have mechanical and/or electrical skills, that would be very beneficial. You should have at least some offshore and/or heavy weather sailing experience. A calm, happy disposition is also critical :-)
The boat will layover in San Francisco during most of october, and then cruise down to Baja Mexico, where it's actually sunny. Help with that leg would be greatly appreciated as well. After getting to Baja, there is no plan, but visiting Cypress would be a good thing!
I'd love to hear from you if you're interested. I speak some German and a little Spanish, but english is my main language. Here's my email: trota@sunshine.yznet.com
Cheers, Tom

I have a great desire to crew for deliveries, deckhand for pleasure or racing. I will take an unpaid position for sea time. Require food, negotiate transportation if needed.
My sailing experience began at the age of 8 and still continues, now 34. Briefly, I have logged about 5000+ miles of blue water. On a Westsail 32' my travels have taken me up and down the East coast from Lake Ontario to Florida several times, to the Bahamas and Berry Islands, and the coastal waters of Florida. In Washington state, cruised in a Tayana 37' on Pudget Sound around the San Juans and half way up Vancouver Island. Twice, up the Straits and down the Pacific to Oregon in rough 20' seas were memorable voyages. During college I raced 420's and cat's and recently I have owned a 21' Viking, with a catalina hull designed in '64, she was a first of her kind - very fast!
My knowledge of sailing in all types of weather, nautical terminology, basic navigation rules, mechanically intuitive, and a O.K. cook makes me a "great" candidate. Looking forward to your correspondence!
