Worked in spring 2000 for Skanska Dredging waiting for my employment in Namibia to start. The Capten on the Svanen and I got contacted through connections via the owners of the vessel in Holland and IPS an manning agency in Holland, to work in Namibian waters on a diamond mining vessel (Namibian Gem a "dredger" with sofisticated plant to recover diamonds). The vessels propulsion power is 2940 KW with a crew of 40-45. For the first 2 years I worked as a first engineer with two 2nd engineers,2 motormen,1 electrician and 1 welder in charge of. For the last 6 months I worked as Chief Engineer. I am interested in exchanging free labor for education. At the moment I do not have any on the water experience as crew, but I am currently studying the book 'Sailing Fundementals'. This obviously has it's limitations however.
Beginning in April, as soon as the boathouse opens, I intend to join the Community Boating Program here in Boston, and learn the basics of rigging, navigation etc. I would like to find a knowledgable Captain to guide me, and teach me more advanced skills, and hopefully take me on as crew at some point.
Due to schooling obligations until June, my travel area is unfortunately limited to the Boston area. Though I would be willing to travel to Rhode Island, Cape Cod, or Martha's Vineyard on weekends.
